Minjae attended the workshop for the ‘Development of high-speed photosynthetic cell factories and smart process technology for replacing petroleum’ (Daegu, Korea). Minjae gave a presentation about the results for two years.

Minjae attended the annual conference of ‘the Korean Society of Phycology’ (Siheung, Korea). Minjae has been recommended as a regular member of the society and plans to engage in various activities to contribute to the society’s development in the future.

Minjae and Yong Hwan attended the international conference KSBB-AFOB 2025 (Incheon, Korea). The main topic of the conference was ‘Synthetic biology in the AI era’. The world of synthetic biology using bacteria and yeast looks interesting, but many things have already been done. Since our team aims for ‘achieving synthetic biology in microalgae’, Yong Hwan and Minjae tried to learn many advanced knowledge reported in bacterial and yeast systems. Also, Yong Hwan did a 3-min flash talk (entitled: Two-step cultivation strategies to enhance lipid accumulation in a Chlamydomonas mutant knocked out of a negative regulator of fatty acid synthesis) in front of audiences and referees. Yong Hwan, good job!

Congratulations! Our manuscript ‘Increasing lipid accumulation in Chlamydomonas by serial knocking out of DYRKP1 kinase and ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase’ was published in the Microbial Cell Factories (IF 4.9 (2025); JCR top 15.5% in Biotechnology & Applied Microbiology).

Congratulations! Our lab will get a 1.5 years funding from the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology. We will conduct research for the next 1.5 years to understand high-temperature responses of microalgae and develop thermotolerant strains which can be used for aquatic feeds.

Minjae and Ji Won attended the international conference ICOP/ISOP 2025 (Seoul, Korea). We learned many things during the conference.

APBL team (Minjae, Ji Won, Yong Hwan, and Kyungshik) visited the National Institute of Fisheries Science, Breeding Research Center in Namhae, and held a meeting on future collaborations. This experience motivated APBL team members.

APBL team (Minjae, Ji Yeon, Ji Won, and Yong Hwan) visited the National Institute of Fisheries Science, Breeding Research Center in Nambu-myeon, Geoje, and held a meeting on future joint research. Afterwards, we had a tour of the facility with Dr. Minhwan Jeong. We expect that this experience will further enrich the content and depth of our research.

Congratulations! Our lab will get a 5 years funding from the Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion. As part of a large research group, we will conduct research for the next five years to elucidate the toxin metabolism process, one of the carbon metabolism processes of dinoflagellates.

Minjae will be working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Technology & Convergence Engineering (Marine Biotechnology) at KIOST School, University of Science and Technology (UST, https://www.ust.ac.kr/kor/) for three years (March 1, 2025 – February 29, 2028).

Our manuscript ‘Knocking out the carboxyltransferase interactor 1 (CTI1) in Chlamydomonas boosted oil content by fivefold without affecting cell growth’ was published in the Plant Biotechnology Journal (IF 11.2 (2024); JCR top 1.7% in Plant Sciences). Our work was introduced by BRIC 한빛사.

Our manuscript ‘Partial decrease of xanthophyll contents by β-carotene hydroxylase knockout enables high-density cultivation of Chlamydomonas’ was published in the Journal of Applied Phycology (IF 2.8 (2024); JCR top 11.3% in Marine & Freshwater Biology).
